Chamillionaire Rap Career

While still a teenager, Chamillionaire started rapping with his best friend Paul Wall. When DJ Michael “5000” Watts, a popular mixtape DJ from Houston and owner of Swishahouse invited Chamillionaire and Paul to rap on his Huston radio show aired by KBXX-FM station, their first session was so successful, they became regulars on the show.

After some time, Chamillionaire and Paul became frustrated since what they put into their mixtapes was not generating the expected results. They left Swishahouse and started their own mixtape group named The Color Changin’ Click, and in 2002 they released their first album, Get Ya Mind Correct. The record sold over 150,000 copies and The Source magazine nominated it for the Independent Album of the Year 2012.

The Color Changin’ Click helped them realize their dream as each mixtape released brought them business opportunities. The most rewarding of these was a contract to do a full album for Paid in Full Records.

In 2005, Chamillionaire released his first solo album, The Sound of Revenge which hit the Billboard Hot 200 chart at number 10. However, one single, Ridin which was on the album reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart while its video won the Best Rap Video award during the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. The same song earned Chamillionaire an Emmy for the Best Rap Performance in 2007.

Chamillionaire is widely known for two things. When he released his album, Ultimate Victory, it was lauded for being completely free of profanity.

Chamillionaire also stands out because in 2010 when he released his mixtape Major Pain, he made available the first song titled The Main Event for free download on iTunes in honour of the 2010 NBA All-Star Game taking place in Dallas, Texas.

It can safely be said that Chamillionaire has achieved his goal of making music that is meaningful instead of producing songs just for the money.
