Douglas Osborne McClure is best remembered as Trampas the cowboy during the NBC Western series, The Virginian. The period that this TV show aired, from 1962 to 1971 was the time when Westerns were the in thing.

Doug McClure Film & TV Career

Doug’s film and TV career ran from the 1950s to the 1990s. Doug’s first public appearance was ina minor role where he played an army officer in the film California Gold Rush in Reverse.

Even though his acting debut was in film, it was TV that made Doug popular, especially when he landed a part in The Virginian. Doug made more than 500 appearances in his career, playing a total of about 20 roles in his late 40s.

The highlight of his career was when on 16 December 1994 they placed Doug’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. When he died, they placed a floral arrangement on the star.

Doug McClure Early Life and Family

Doug was born in Glendale, California on 11 May 1935 to an Irish-American father and an English mother. Doug had one brother, Reed.

He started riding horses when he was only 8 and as he was growing up, Doug spent most of his summers on a cattle ranch in Nevada, taking part in the occasional rodeo.

Doug went to University High School in West Los Angeles where he was active in different sports. When he got a part in a high school play, Doug saw his future open up. This led him to study drama at Santa Monica City College and UCLA while he was working part-time as a model.

Doug McClure Marriage, Divorce &Children

Doug was married 5 times and divorced 4 times. His first marriage was to Faye Brash in September 1957, divorcing in May of 1961. The marriage resulted in a daughter. Doug’s second wife was BarBara Luna from December 1961 to 1963. Helen Crane was Doug’s third wife and they were married from October 1965 to 1968. In July 1970, Doug married Diane Soldani and their marriage came to an end in August 1979. Just like with the relationship that Doug had with Faye, his union with Diane Soldani gave rise to another daughter. His final marriage was to Diane Furnberg. They got married on 27 August 1979 and the marriage lasted until 5 February 1995 when Doug died.

Doug’s daughter, Tame has followed in her father’s footsteps as an actress and a singer. She had a role in Legally Blond and its sequel.

Doug McClure Death

During the last two years of his life, Doug struggled with cancer. But he did not let this get in the way of his work, he worked until the very end. He made an appearance in Kung Fu: The Legend Continues in 1993, Maverick and Burke’s Law in 1994, and Riders in the Storm in 1995.

Doug loved acting and worked till the very end. On 8 January 1995, Doug was on set filming One West Wakiki when he collapsed and when he was flown to Los Angeles the doctor said that the cancer had spread.

On 5 February 1995 in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, Doug gave up the fight against lung cancer and died at the age of 59with friends and family by his side.He was laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery, in Santa Monica.

While Doug was still alive, one of his daughters had a talk with Mike Reiss, the executive producer of The Simpsons. After Mike found out that Doug had been a great fan of The Simpsons, he modelled the character of Troy McClure after Doug.

Doug thought that the imitation was funny and he had a fun time watching the episode. His daughters would jokingly call Doug Troy McClure. Doug also got a mention in two Red Dwarf episodes titled Backwards and Legion.
