Jesse L. Martin is an American actor and singer. He has mainly performed on stage at first and did a lot of singing there as well. Later, he managed to transfer to TV and movies and continued a good career there. He is mostly remembered for his portrayal of Detective Ed Green on “Law & Order”. His theater career will be recognized for playing Tom Collins on Broadway in the adaptation of “Rent.” He currently stars on CW’s “The Flash”, as detective Joe West.

Jesse L. Martin started traveling along the country and performing with acting groups after graduation. He eventually landed on Broadway with his debuting role being in “Timon of Athens”. But his star role would come in 1990s when he was cast in the musical called “Rent” which took everybody by storm. This would be something that would define his career as he would come back to this role again and again. Afterwards he appeared in such plays as “The Merchant of Venice” and “The Winter’s Tale” which would go on to define his career.

Jesse L. Martin started his TV career very well. He was first cast to play a small role on “Ally McBeal”, which did not go unnoticed. David Duchovny, of all people, liked his performance and cast him in an episode of “The X-Files”, which Duchovny wrote and directed. When an opportunity arose for him to play a part in “Law & Order,” Martin jump up and took it. Benjamin Bratt was getting ready to leave the show and they needed a replacement. Marin stepped up and asked for the part and after it was head that both Fox and NBC have offered Martin development deals, they immediately gave the part to Martin without even getting him to try out for the role. He went on to star in “Law & Order” for eight years and was one of the longest running characters of the shows. After that, his career took him to various other places and shows that he made. So you can see him on “The Philanthropist”, “Smash” and “The Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives”. His latest role is being Joe West in CW “The Flash”. But he has also made an appearance on other Arrowverse shows with his first appearance actually being in “Arrow”.

In films, Jesse L. Martin has not have the same success as on TV. But he does not mind the work that he did there. He actually acted in a film iteration of “Rent”, reprising the role of Tom Collins. He was also cast in 2013 to replace Lenny Kravitz in the role of Marvin Gaye in the upcoming biopic about the famous singer.
