Lester Holt is an American journalist who anchors the Weekday edition of NBC Nightly News. And you might also know him from the Dateline NBC. He has been working as an anchor at the NBC since 2015, however, he has been working for the NBC since 2000 and he has reported from every single major storyline since then.
Lester Holt Age
Lester Holt was born on March 8, 1959. At the time of writing this article, Lester Holt is 58 years old.
Lester Holt Partner and Family
Lester Holt was born in Marin County, California. He is a son of June (maiden name DeRozario) and Lester Don Holt Sr. From his mother side, Lester is part Jamaican, part English and part Indian. His father was in the U.S. Air Force and his family had to relocate often while he was growing up. His mother was a regional planner.
Right now, Holt lives in Manhattan with his wife Carol Hagen. The two of them have two sons, Stefan and Cameron. Stefan graduated in 2009 from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. He continued father footsteps and he was a morning news anchor at NBC’s WMAQ-TV in Chicago. In 2016 Stefan started working in the same building with his father. On September 6, 2017, The Today Show reported that Stefan Holt became a father of a strong tiny son, while Lester Holt became a grandfather.
Lester Holt’s Wife
The huge “elephant in the room” is a rumor about some problems in the relationship between Lester and his wife. Although it was published by some websites, that rumor is not true. It was loosely based on a claim made by a couple of journalists who noticed that Lester and Carol stopped going out together in 2016. However, that information is only a rumor.
- Lester Holt’s wife, Carol Hagen is a licensed real-estate agent. She lives and works in New York. According to her Town Real Estate profile, her specialty is helping people (clients) relocate and to maximizing the price of their estate.
- Carol worked in a travel industry.
- Carol and Lester often travel together.
- The two of them met while she was working as a flight attendant.
Lester Holt Career and Education
Lester graduated from Cordova High School in Rancho Cordova, California in 1977. He also attended California State University. His major was government, however, he has never graduated.
His first job was as a radio DJ for Country and Western music and he was doing that for a living through his college days. In 1981 he started working for CBS as a reporter and weekend anchor on KNXT in Los Angeles. In 1986, Holt started working for WBBM-TV in Chicago, where he spent 14 years as a news anchor behind the desk but also from all the troubled spots around the planet (Iraq, Northern Ireland, Somalia, El Salvador, Haiti, etc).
MSNBC became Holt’s home in 2000, and in 2003 he assumed a full-time job at NBC News where he worked as an anchor for “NBC Nightly News”, “Today”, and “Weekend Today”. He stayed on that position and became one of the best anchors. He is currently a host for NBC’s Dateline.
Over the years, Lester Holt earned the nickname “Iron Pants” because of his ability to stay on his job (and on-air) for hours and hours. He traveled to any place on Earth that can have some breaking news. Everything from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 to the earthquake in Haiti in 2010.
In 2015 Holt even became a substitute anchor for NBC Nightly News and he took that position from his colleague Brian Williams. That Williams story is something different. He was actually accused of fabricating stories. The most important was the one in which he claimed he’d been in a helicopter hit by enemy fire during the Iraq War. One of the pilots of those helicopters attacked him on Twitter and uncovered his lies. That is why Williams had to retire.
Holt has stayed in that position and became the first African American leading anchor on a broadcast network’s weekday nightly newscast.
Lester Holt even moderated the Democratic presidential candidates’ debate in January of 2016, as well as the first presidential debate on September 26, 2016.
Lester Holt’s Acting Career
Apart from his news anchor job, Holt also tried to be an actor… Truth to be told, that wasn’t acting, he has been a news anchor on TV clips in various famous movies and TV series since 1993. His first movie was “The Fugitive” in 1993, and later its sequel and so on.
