Manu Bennett Biography

Manu Bennett is a New Zealand actor mostly known for his roles in epic fantasy movies and series. TV fans will remember him as playing the gladiator Crixus in the show about “Spartacus”. But newer fans will remember his for his portrayal of one of the most iconic DC villains, Slade Wilson a.k.a. Deathstroke, in the titular Arrowverse franchise.

Manu started his career in New Zealand and Australia. While attending school in New Zealand he played for 1st XV. After his return to Australia he was choose for the New South Wales Schoolboys Rugby Union Team. Due to his natural physicality, he was a good player, but a traffic accident which saw him put in a coma and his mother and brother dead turned his life upside down. He turned to acting and dancing and started taking piano lessons. He would later explain that acting helped him turn his life around and helped him go over a very troublesome period of his life.

He started appearing in Australian-based production shows with his first ones being “Paradise Beach,” “Water Rats,” “All Saints” and “Beastmaster”. But it was in 1999 when Manu managed to land his first leading role and he was cast in “Tomoko.” He would lead on his success with appearances in “Xena: Warrior Princess” where he played the part of Mark Anthony. In 2006 he managed to land two big roles which would introduce him much better to the American audiences. He was cast alongside WWE legend John Cena in the movie dubbed “Marine” and would appear as an antagonist in “30 Days of Night” opposite Josh Hartnett. But the role which would defy his career was that of gladiator Crixus in the Starz’s “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”. He started off as the main antagonist of the story in season one. But as his character developed and as the audience took a liking to him, he became one of the most important allay to Spartacus and one of fan favorites. He started in all of the seasons of “Spartacus”, as well as the prequel series “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” and the final show “Spartacus: War of the Damned”.

Manu Bennet has a knack for playing villain characters and strong male roles. This is mainly due to his own body type and physical abilities. This earned him a role in CW’s “Arrow” where he started off as a mentor to Oliver Queen. He played Slade Wilson, who would in season 2 become the main antagonist of the show and take the mantle of Deathsroke. Unfortunately, his mother and his brother both died during an accident in which Manu almost lost his life as well. The family actually moved to Australia when Manu was just a few months old and he made his younger days mostly living between Sydney and Newcastle in Australia. He also attended Merewather High School there. But he moved back to New Zealand where he attended Te Aute College where he started playing rugby.
