Mos Def is the stage name of Yasiin Bey, as he is currently known for. He is an aspiring hip-hop artist, actor, recording artist and activist. He started off as a child star and mostly dabbled in acting at first. But he is most recognizable for his songs and lyrics and his outspoken view about his beliefs. Mos Def started off his music career alongside his siblings as they formed the Urban Thermo Dynamics in 1994. But the group was short-lived and he would later appear on records and collaborate with such artists as De la Soul and Da Bush Babees. He then formed the dup called Black Star with Talib Kweli, who is another rapper from Brooklyn.

Mos Def became a part of Rawkus Records and also started producing solo albums. To his name he has five studio albums credited, with the debuting one being “Black on Both Sides” (1999). He has also been collaborating with other people and produced four collaborative albums with other artist. His influence and music was so great that he has been listed in About.com’s “50 greatest MC’s of our time” list as number 14.

Since Mos Def firstly started as a child actor on TV, his IMDB record is pretty stacked. But he became popular later in his career where he would star in some very prominent and famous movies. He is mostly recognized for roles in moves like “Something the Lord Made” (2004), “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (2006), “Next Day Air” (2009), “Be Kind Rewind” (2008), “16 Blocks” (2006), “The Italian Job” (2003), “Brown Sugar” (2002) and “Bamboozled” (2000). His TV career is also impressive and he also appeard on the “Chappelle Show,” voiced the character of Gangastalicious on “The Boondocks” and played brother Sam on “Dexter.” He was also the host of the infamous Def Poetry Jam.

It was in 2011 that Mos Def changed his name to Yasiin Bey and is from there on legally known as that. He has also recently announced his retirement and announced that his last album is going to come out in 2017 and will be titled “Negus in Natural Person.” He has also announced his retirement from acting and is focusing now on other endeavors.

His parents are Sheron Smith and Abdul Rahman and he was one of 12 children and step-children in his family. He was mostly raised by his mother as he grew up in Brooklyn, while his father reside in New Jersey. He attended Philippa Schuyler Middle School 386 in Bushwich, Brooklyn. It is here where he found love for acting. But later on, Mos would decide to drop out of school in his sophomore year because of an affair with an older woman.
