Pat McGrath Education and Career
Pat McGrath was born on 11 June 1965 in Northampton, England. She and her older sister Faith were raised and aspired by their single mother Jean. McGrath says that Jean was the one responsible for her love of fashion and make-up. In one interview, Pat gave to Vogue in 2007, she said, “She trained me, basically, to do the shows, right there… Look at the pattern, check the fabrics, look for the make-up and begin”. That leads us to a fact that Pat McGrath, the most influential make-up artist of the modern time, didn’t have any real training in fashion.
The only part of her education connected to fashion or make-up (other than her mother) is an art foundation course she attended at Northampton College. However, that didn’t stop her from working with famous designers like Alexander McQueen and John Galliano.
Pat McGrath is now a self-made billionaire. However, that didn’t come easily. While learning to become a make-up artist, she worked as a receptionist. She first came into the spotlight while working for the i-D magazine. That is a British magazine dedicated to fashion, music, art and youth culture. At the beginning of the 90’s she single-handedly brought the “i-D Magazine” to a position of international importance. After that, she worked with some of the world’s famous photographers and her work and photos have been published in fashion magazines like Vogue, W, and Harper’s Bazaar.
The base of her talent is, obviously, made by her mother. She taught her how to combine all kinds of shades and materials. Her most creative make-ups are actually, handmade, and (like her mother) she mostly works with her fingers rather than with brushes. Her every creation is unique and she works according to the fabrics she sees and faces of girls she works on.
In 2013, Pat McGrath was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire by none else than Queen Elizabeth II.
On October 2015, Pat McGrath debuted her own makeup line called Pat McGrath Labs. That was a very important step towards the net worth Pat McGrath has today. The first product was Gold 001 gold eyeshadow, spatula, mixing liquid, and an extra container.
It was retailed for $40. It was a limited launch and could only be bought on her website. That product was followed by Phantom 02, Skin Fetish 003, Lust 004, and the most recent product was Metalmorphosis 005. All those collections were limited.
At start she didn’t want anyone meddling with her business and that is why she self-founded everything. Only recently she decided to let the investors work with her. The Eurazeo Brands that did invest in her brand issued a press release in which they stated that Pat McGrath Labs was voted the number one most engaged beauty product (brand) on Facebook out of 500 top beauty brands. And it is not just Facebook.
Pat McGrath has more than 2.1 million followers on Instagram. To thank all the people that helped her in the past and to share the news about the investment, Pat decided to make an official statement on her Instagram profile.
