Harvey started his career as a stand-up comedian. This professional beginning evolved to different television roles. He appeared as a host of Showtime at the Apollo and was one of the comedians that played in the Spike Lee movie The Original Kings of Comedy.

When Harvey was in his teens, the family moved to Cleveland. He graduated from Glenville High School in Cleveland in 1974. After graduation, Steve went back to his home state to attend West Virginia University. So, he graduated from University and started to make his living doing different jobs. For instance, he worked as a postman and insurance salesman.

Finally, in 1985, Steve Harvey appeared on the stage. He started performing as a stand-up comedian in small clubs. Consequently, this led to the Second Annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search in 1989, where Harvey made it to the finals.

From there, Steve Harvey’s Career took off. He appeared as the host of Apollo’s Showtime in 1993 and stayed on the show for 7 years. In addition, he expanded his career in numerous other ways.

Harvey managed to get his own sitcom in 1996. It was The Steve Harvey Show on WB Network. He stayed on the air for 6 years, until 2002. This show brought Harvey a huge popularity country-wide, particularly among African-American audience.

Meanwhile, Harvey’s professional success was growing. Together with his WB Network show partner Cedric the Entertainer, Steve launched national standup tour called The Kings of Comedy.

On that tour, two comedians joined Bernie Mac and D.L. Hughley and became super-famous nationwide in a short period of time. Notably, in 1999, The Kings of Comedy became the highest-earning comedy tour ever to date in the United States, collecting in more than $19 million.

In addition, this led to release of a documentary in 2000, directed by Spike Lee. Documentary The Original Kings of Comedy captured the high spots of a two-night show in North Carolina. Film cost only $3 million to make. In the end, it earned more than $38 million at the box office.
