Tevin Campbell is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He is a well-known artist with Platinum-selling album T.E.V.I.N. Tevin’s highest charting song on that album was “Tell Me What You Want Me to Do” reaching a number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. He has been active since 1988. You might remember his songs “I’m Ready” and “Can We Talk.”
Tevin Campbell Age
Tevin Campbell was born on November 12, 1976. At the moment of writing this article, Tevin is 40 years old.
Tevin Campbell Partner and Family
Tevin Jermod Campbell was born and raised in Waxahachie, Texas. He showed his love towards signing at the age of 4. Many have compared him to the legends like Stevie Wonder and even Michael Jackson. He performed in a small church in his hometown, just like the legends we mentioned. He mostly sang gospels as a member of a church choir and later as a soloist in a small town south of Dallas, Texas.
It is believed that his mother’s friend discovered him and that he introduced little Tevin to Jazz flutists Bobbie Humphrey. He sang to her over a phone in New York. She immediately decided to take him in and to submit his audio and videotape to Warned Bros Records. That course of things led to the meeting with Benny Medina. He was the senior vice president and general sales manager of black music for Warner Bros. Later on, he met Quincy Jones, and the rest is history.
The most responsible person for all that is Tevin’s mother Rhonda Byrd who was his greatest influence in life. She was a postal worker when Tevin was a child. Everybody knew her as “little Aretha.” You can guess twice why was that her nickname.
Campbell once told Dennis Hunt of the Los Angeles Times, “Rhonda pushed me and made me see trying to be a big solo singer was something I should do. Without her pushing me, I’d still be in the background. To some extent, that’s what happened to her. She has a good singing voice she has never fully developed. I guess nobody pushed her to get ahead. She didn’t want to see me waste my talent too”. Rhonda was Tevin’s co-manager.
His mother’s story gets interrupted in those first years of his success, and she somehow falls into the shadow he will become. We presume that she did a good job as Tevin’s manager, but we are not sure what happened to her later.
We found two writers who go by the name of Rhonda Byrd. One is Rhonda Byrd and other Rhonda Rhea Byrd. Both of those authors published books about their struggles with cancer. To be more precise, both of those books deal with breast cancer and author’s fight against it. We presume that those two authors are the same person. But again, we are not sure if that author is Tevin’s mom. Two books are called “My Life is More Valuable than a Breast, Is Yours?”, and, “Beyond the Pink Ribbon: My Spiritual Journey Through Breast Cancer”.
Tevin Campbell is very successfully hiding all the details about his private life. We don’t know anything about his current whereabouts. Don’t get us wrong, he is active on his social accounts, but there is nothing there that can say anything about his private life. We do know that he is against the racism, we are aware that he is setting up a small version of a studio in his living room, which can mean that he will produce something new shortly. Maybe he is going back to his roots. Maybe he will create some “throwback” music as he knew in the past? Again, we don’t know anything about it. Just wait and see.
Tevin Campbell Career
Tevin’s career started with his debut single, “Tomorrow (A Better You And Me)”. That song was No.1 on all the charts. Prince featured Tevin on the soundtrack to his terrible movie called “Graffiti Bridge”. He also produced “Round and Round” as a substantial R&B hit.
In 1991, Tevin published his platinum-selling debut “T.E.V.I.N”. Nearly every song on this album made its way to the radio. “Tell Me What You Want Me To Do”, “Just Ask Me To”, “Goodbye”, “Confused”, “One Song” and “Strawberry Letter 23”. They were all one of the most popular songs of that period, together with the legendary singles, “Alone With You”, and “Can We Talk”. Those are slow songs, like every other R&B song of that period, but that is what R&B is. In 1993 those songs were big!
Tevin was one of the most famous artists of the early 90s, and he was just 16 years old. He even sold over 2 million copies of that album and received three Grammy nominations.
And his career started going down. In 1996 he dropped another album called “Back To The World.” It was just way below the quality he got us used to. To this date, I am not sure if people were tired of his style or the album was a mediocre one.
Three years later, Tevin tried to reclaim his old glory and published another album, “Tevin Campbell”. There were good songs on that album. I remember that “Another Way” was an excellent song.
Is Tevin Campbell Gay?
Later in 1999, Tevin was arrested. He was accused of soliciting oral sex from an undercover male cop in a well-known gay cruising zone, and he was also caught “riding dirty”. That threw a terrible image to that pure crystal voice. Since then, Tevin flew under the radar.
Tevin Campbell Ethnicity
Tevin Campbell is black, and he is a citizen of the United States. Other details about his ancestry are not known.
Tevin Campbell Net Worth
Tevin Campbell net worth is 2 million dollars. However, that info is not new. We don’t know about his current earnings, but we are confident that he is going to figure the things out. Maybe he could prepare a great comeback and surprise us all?
